Dear Colleague,

The 1-day workshop, "Multi-scale, multi-physics Frameworks in MODEST
(and Elsewhere)" will take place at Drexel University, Philadelphia, on
Friday, September 15, 2006.

As many of you may know, during the past year a number of MODEST
astronomers have begun to experiment with different methods of tying
together modules modeling stellar dynamics, stellar evolution, and
stellar collisions within a high-level programming environment. The
"MUSE" project is our first attempt at creating such a framework:

In the process of developing MUSE, it has become clear to us that the
integration of programs written in many different languages, describing
many different physical processes, is a very complex task, and not at
all unique to our field. The purpose of this workshop is to invite
experts in software frameworks in other areas of computational science
to share their experiences with us, to inform our own fledgling efforts.

The format of the workshop is a little unusual by MODEST standards, as
the morning will consist of three invited 30-minute talks, with 30
minutes of discussion following each. The invited speakers are David
Berhholdt (Oak Ridge National Laboratory), Erik Schnetter (LSU Center
for Computation and Technology), and V. Balaji (Princeton University).
The afternoon session will be more traditionally MODEST in its lack of
structure, and will be devoted to informal discussion, demonstrations,
and possibly additional short presentations. More information can be
found on the workshop web page:

      http://manybody.org/modest/Workshops/modest-7c.html

As always, there is no registration fee for the workshop. I would,
however ask that, if you are interested in attending, you let me know by
e-mail as soon as possible, so that I can reserve the right sized room.

I look forward to seeing you in September!

Steve McMillan
